2nd Edition Brain Chess Primary Schools Tournament – (2023)

Raising the standard, one move at a time

Following the success of the first edition, Brain Chess Academy returned in 2023 with the second edition of its Primary Schools Chess Tournament — and this time, the energy was even higher.

Once again hosted at Christ the King School, Gbagada, the tournament welcomed 38 schools, bringing together young chess players from different backgrounds, all ready to test their skills and improve their game.

From the opening rounds, it was clear that the level had gone up. The games were sharper, the thinking deeper, and the confidence on display showed that many of these students were no longer just beginners — they had come prepared.

🏆 A New Champion Emerges

This edition delivered exciting moments and well-fought battles across boards, but a few schools stood out with exceptional performances:

🥇 Home Science Association of Nursery and Primary School, Oko Oba claimed the top spot, showing remarkable improvement and determination to emerge as champions.

🥈 Marvelvine Montessori School finished as first runner-up, impressing spectators with disciplined and consistent play throughout the tournament.

🥉 Tender Cradle School secured the second runner-up position, proving their strength among a highly competitive field.

Growth You Could See

One thing that stood out in this second edition was growth — not just in results, but in the players themselves.

  • Students showed better understanding of strategy
  • Games were more competitive and engaging
  • Confidence levels were noticeably higher

For many parents and schools present, it was clear that chess was doing more than just teaching a game;  it was shaping how these children think and approach challenges.

Building a Stronger Chess Culture

The 2nd edition reinforced Brain Chess Academy’s commitment to developing young talents and creating opportunities for them to compete and grow.

It also showed that consistency matters. Schools that had participated before came back stronger, more prepared, and more determined, a clear sign that the impact was lasting
